Black People Went Backwards Under Obama

Tavis Smiley: 'Black People Will Have Lost Ground in Every Single Economic Indicator' Under Obama.

Millions of Americans suffered a loss of wealth during the recession and the sluggish recovery that followed.

But the last half-decade has proved far worse for black and Hispanic families than for white families, starkly widening the already large gulf in wealth between non-Hispanic white Americans and most minority groups, according to a new study from the Urban Institute. -Annie Lowrey Go To Site

One of the things that turned up, during a long-overdue cleanup of my office, was an old yellowed copy of the New York Times dated July 24, 1992. One of the front-page headlines said: "White-Black Disparity in Income Narrowed in 80's, Census Shows." The 1980s? Wasn't that the years of the Reagan administration, the "decade of greed," the era of "neglect" of the poor and minorities, if not "covert racism"?

More recently, during the administration of America's first black president, a 2011 report from the Pew Research Center has the headline, "Wealth Gaps Rise to Record Highs Between Whites, Blacks and Hispanics." -Thomas Sowell Go To Site

The number of black food-stamp participants exploded across that time frame from 7,393,000 to 11,699,000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports — up 58.2 percent.

“The country’s back to pretty much where it was when this president started. White people in this country are doing a bit better. Black people are doing a full point worse.”

The wealth gaps between whites and minorities have grown to their widest levels since the U.S. government began tabulating them a quarter-century ago. The recession and uneven recovery have erased decades of minority gains, leaving whites on average with 20 times the net worth of blacks and 18 times that of Hispanics, according to an analysis of new Census data.

Tyrone Melendez is a black man who did not vote, and the result is fine with him... He also looks around at his own community and sees the unfulfilled promise of the years of President Obama, for whom he voted twice.

Persistent wealth, income, and education gaps continue to devastate the black working class in America, he says. For those reasons and more, he’s now a supporter of Trump. Go To Site

Conventional wisdom now holds that Donald Trump is president because he identified the angry white counterparts of black voters who have watched the world pass them by election after election. Maybe black voters are angry, too. And maybe with Donald Trump, of all people, they’ll get some political respect that matters. - Daniel Henninger Go To Site
