Leftists In 2020: "Defund The Police!"

Joe Biden said in an interview Wednesday that some funding should "absolutely" be redirected from police, amid calls from some in his party to "defund the police" in the wake of the protests across the country.

This is no secret that 'defund the police' is unpopular. It’s stupid. It’s peddled by the most liberal and detached of society. It was birthed from the area that needs policing the most: urban America...

No one likes it; even black Americans don’t want it. It’s led to nothing but mayhem as America’s cities burned throughout the summer, exacerbated by anti-cop Democrats in these areas across the country.

Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia and other liberal cities are facing a dramatic rise in violence which has forced the city leaders to reevaluate their stance on defunding the police, a Sunday report says.

Protesters that engulfed the nation’s streets in summer 2020 following George Floyd‘s death clamored for taking funds away from police departments in favor of other community servies. As a result, a number of police departments across the U.S. had their budgets reduced, The New York Times (NYT) reported.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) lost $150 million, or 8% of its budget in 2020, The NYT reported. The Minneapolis Police Department’s and the Metropolitan Police Department’s budgets were cut by $7.7 million and $15 million, respectively.

Homicides grew by 45% in New York and 36% in Los Angeles last year, according to The NYT.

New York City has seen 76 murders this year alone, compared with 68 from the same time period in 2020. The City Council in July approved slashing $1 billion from the police budget, which included nearly $484 million in cuts and $354 million reallocated to other agencies ''best positioned to carry out the duties that have been previously assigned to the New York Police Department, like the Department of Education, the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene and the Department of Homeless Services." Another $162 million was slashed through "associated costs," the council said in a statement.
