D.C. prosecutors have filed additional charges against more than 200 protesters arrested during President Trump’s inauguration, continuing to drill down on suspects they believe smashed restaurant windows, set a limousine on fire and attacked the car’s driver.
While most of the protesters were initially charged with one count of felony rioting, a grand jury on Thursday returned a superseding indictment that added new charges: inciting or urging to riot, conspiracy to riot and counts of destruction of property.

The Cornell Daily Sun reports that students hosted a “Cry In” on the quad Wednesday in the wake of the presidential election results. “I’m quite terrified, honestly,” one student told the campus newspaper as she took part in the event...
As the event took place, students — roughly 20 or so, according to the Sun’s video — wrote their reactions and emotions on poster boards with colored markers, or with chalk on the ground. A chilly day on the Ithaca campus, at one point the demonstrators huddled together as what appeared to be a barista brought them warm drinks.

One girl sank to the ground and rocked back and forth. Dozens of students cried and hugged each other. Most slumped their shoulders and shook their heads in shock. “I can’t believe this is happening,” students repeated.
Sophie Neiman, BC ’17, said she felt devastated by Trump’s victory. “This is catastrophic for women, for minorities, for our country in general,” she said. “I’ve seen people weeping in the streets—I just cried onto my friend's shoulder.”

Benjamin Ryan — considered a “Hillblazer” because he raised over $100,000 for the former Democratic nominee — detailed his suicidal nervous breakdown for the Huffington Post on Wednesday. He said he was “catatonic, plagued by involuntary jerking motions, speech patterns disjointed, weeping uncontrollably.”
“I found out Donald Trump had won the Electoral College while midstream in providing a urine sample for the emergency psychiatric staff of a New York City public hospital,” Ryan writes.

U.S. EPA employees were in tears. Worried Energy Department staffers were offered counseling. Some federal employees were so depressed, they took time off. Others might retire early. And some employees are in downright panic mode in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s victory.
“People are upset. Some people took the day off because they were depressed,” said John O’Grady, president of American Federation of Government Employees Council 238, a union that represents thousands of EPA employees. After Election Day, “people were crying,” added O’Grady, who works in EPA’s Region 5 office in Chicago. “They were recommending that people take sick leave and go home.”

For the third night in a row, anti-Donald Trump demonstrators took to the streets in several big cities and on college campuses across the United States, including an outburst of smashed windows and a dumpster fire in Portland that police countered with pepper spray and flash-bang devices. About 4,000 protesters assembled downtown late Thursday chanting “we reject the president-elect!”
Some among the crowd vandalized 19 cars at a dealership in Northeast Portland, according to a sales manager, Oregonlive.com reports. Protesters then headed west, over the Broadway Bridge and into the Pearl District, where the windows of several businesses were smashed.

About 7,000 demonstrators filled streets in Oakland on Wednesday night -- and some turned violent. Protesters hurled Molotov cocktails, rocks and fireworks at police. Three officers were injured, police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said....

Chicago police were searching for a group of people who assaulted a motorist this week while bystanders laughed and taunted him about voting for President-elect Donald Trump. The incident, which was caught on video, occurred Wednesday afternoon on the city's West Side. The victim, 49-year-old David Wilcox, told reporters that he was trying to make a left turn when another car pulled up and scraped the side of his vehicle.
The video shows three men repeatedly punching and kicking Wilcox. Bystanders can be heard yelling, "You voted Trump!" and "Don't vote Trump!" along with the more quotidian "Beat his ass!"

An Ohio man was in court Thursday on a federal charge that he tweeted an explicit threat to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. Zachary Benson, 24, of the Cleveland suburb of Fairview Park, could face five years in prison if he's convicted of the single count of making threats against the president and successors to the presidency.

The Akron Fire Department says that a 69-year-old man set himself on fire Saturday after yelling about the election results in a local coffee shop... A Rutgers University professor was reportedly taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after making 'threatening' comments about shooting white people, flag burning and gun control in light of Donald Trump's election. Kevin Allred - best known for his women and gender's study class 'Politicizing Beyonce' - was at his Brooklyn home when police arrived on Tuesday night.
Police had responded to his home after Rutgers police told NYPD that had Allred made 'threats to kill white people,' according to the New York Daily News.

One of Michigan’s 16 electors who will be called upon to cast a vote validating the election of Donald Trump in the Electoral College has testified on video that he and others in the state are receiving “dozens and dozens of death threats” from Hillary Clinton supporters urging them to switch their votes to Clinton.
Michael Banerian, 22, of Oakland County, Michigan, is one of that state’s 16 official electors who will meet in the state capital of Lansing on Dec. 19 to cast their votes for Trump. He told the Detroit News Thursday he has received threatening emails, lots of them, from people telling him to vote for Democrat Clinton instead of the GOP victor he is pledged to support.

Wesleyan University students honored America’s veterans Friday by defacing the American flag rather than burning it. It’s at least the third school this week where students upset over the election of Republican Donald Trump have taken out their frustration on the flag, joining American University and Hampshire College.
One held up a large American flag, while the other pulled out a can of spray paint and sprayed “AmeriKKKa” on it... The two students were initially planning to burn the flag, they told the crowd, but “chose not to burn the flag out of respect for Veterans Day,” according to the Argus.

Myself included, members of my two professions, journalism and academia, were shell-shocked the presidential election didn't go as expected. "This is so f—ked up!" a journalist texted me.
At the walk out, Black Student Movement leaders announced a “people of color only lunch” later in the week, and offered to escort anyone who didn’t feel “safe” to their classes or dorm. A “healing space” was also set up in the Campus YMCA, where students could go and decompress after the event.

A dorm at the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday hosted a post-election “Breathing Space” for students stressed out by election results that included cuddling with cats and a puppy, coloring and crafting, and snacks such as tea and chocolate....
“There were actual cats and a puppy there,” Penn student Daniel Tancredi told The College Fix via email. “There were sheets of paper available with black and white printed designs on them for students to color in. Essentially they looked like pages from a coloring book that were printed from a computer. They all had positive feel-good messages on them. Students colored them in with colored pencils.”

A campus-wide vigil at Rice University on Wednesday night meant for students to stand together in the wake of a Trump presidency literally included a massive group hug. The event was billed by organizers as a safe place: “Rice is and will continue to be a safe place for you.”
Members of the university’s “Queer and Allies” club received an email alerting them to resources for Rice’s Wellbeing Center and LGBT centers across Houston. The email concluded urging students to “please use whatever resources you need to process.”

Ohio State University will offer a “safe space” for students today as the nation inaugurates Republican Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States. “The purpose of this event is to foster a safe space for the Ohio State campus community to connect with one another, support aspirations, and empower growth and change,” organizers state.
After Trump won the election, Hampshire lowered the school’s American flag to half-staff.
In a campus-wide email, Hampshire President Jonathan Lash said the College Board of Trustees adopted a policy to occasionally lower the flag to half-staff to mourn deaths from around the world, similar to what most businesses and government agencies do after a tragedy or a notable death.

A University of Louisiana at Lafayette student admitted Thursday to making up a story about being attacked by two men, one reportedly wearing a "Trump" hat, who yelled ethnic slurs at her and then stole her wallet and hijab head covering, according to Lafayette Police.
The woman, identified only as an 18-year-old of Middle Eastern descent, had initially told police the attack happened about 11 a.m. Wednesday on Smith Street near campus — a story quickly picked up by the national news outlets, sparking a social media firestorm.
Ratcliff said the woman might now face charges herself related to filing a false police report. "We don't take this lightly, and it's made national headlines now," he said. "...There will be consequences."

Two days after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, two Portlanders have submitted a petition for a 2018 ballot initiative to have Oregon secede from the United States. On Thursday morning, Jennifer Rollins, a lawyer, and Christian Trejbal, a writer, filed the Oregon Secession Act. "Oregonian values are no longer the values held by the rest of the United States," Trejbal said over the phone Thursday.

The CEO of an Albuquerque-based internet marketing firm has issued a letter telling clients who support President-elect Donald Trump to take their business elsewhere.
Mathew Blanchfield, who runs 1st in SEO, posted the letter describing Mr. Trump as “a racist, sexist, fascist” earlier this month on his company’s website. He said that while he remains committed to his liberal clients, he “will no longer do business with any person that is a registered Republican or supports Donald Trump.”

Professors at Columbia University want space to discuss their “distress” over Donald Trump’s election, saying they don’t know anyone who isn’t “chronically and deeply” upset by the result.
In a letter to Columbia President Lee Bollinger, professors Robert Pollack and Letty Moss-Salentijn, the co-chairs of the Columbia Faculty Affairs Committee, say Trump’s election has cast a “malaise that sits like a fog over Columbia” that not even George Orwell’s classic 1984 can adequately address.
