The Left And The Kids Of Covington Catholic

In the nearly two hours of video footage that greatly elucidate what happened between a group of boys from Covington Catholic High School and Native American veteran Nathan Phillips, there are many moments that turn the media's initial, false narrative - racist teens harass well-meaning elderly man - on its head.

The students are called “hyenas,” “dogs,” “white crackers,” and “faggot.” They are ridiculed for being lice-ridden and told to “go back to Europe where you come from.”

One man says he can tell by looking in the students’ eyes that they will be “school shooters.” They are the “product of sodomy.” We hear that black Jesus is coming back to kick the “white crackers’ ass.”

On Friday's Real Time show on HBO, host Bill Maher tore into Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann, deriding him as a "prick" and a "smirkface" who has a "s***-eating grin."

He ended up making a pedophilia joke as he cracked that he doesn't know "what Catholic priests see in these kids."

Phillips enters the picture around the 1:12 mark, but if you skip to that part, you miss an hour of the Black Hebrew Israelites hurling obscenities at the students.

They call them crackers, faggots, and pedophiles. At the 1:20 mark (which comes after the Phillips incident) they call one of the few black students the n-word and tell him that his friends are going to murder him and steal his organs.

"Nick Sandmann and the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be."

Nathan Phillips, the American Indian who beat his drum in the face of the Covington Catholic boys, now says he is considering calling for the students’ expulsion.

Phillips’ encounter with one Covington student, Nicholas Sandmann, sparked allegations in the media that the Covington boys were mocking and taunting Phillips for his race. Phillips himself claimed that the boys surrounded him and were chanting, “Build the wall.”

However, according to a statement from Sandmann and a full video of the days’ events, Phillips instigated the incident by walking up to the Covington group and loudly beating his drum in their faces.

Despite the fact that Phillips’ claims have been widely disproved, he slammed Sandmann’s statement and suggested the boys should be expelled in an interview with The Cincinnati Inquirer.

The U.S. Marine Corps revealed Wednesday that Native American tribal elder Nathan Phillips who accused Catholic school boys of bigotry is not a war veteran...

Phillips also reportedly has a criminal history. A May 9, 1974 article in The Lincoln Star reported that Phillips, then 19 years old, was “charged with escaping from the Nebraska Penal Complex where he was confined May 3,” according to The Washington Examiner. He also reportedly had a charge of destruction of property dropped in 1973 and pleaded guilty to assault on June 19, 1974, for which he paid a fine of $200.

Phillips also claimed that he served as a “recon ranger” in an April interview with Vogue. “You know, I’m from Vietnam times. I’m what they call a recon ranger,” he said. “That was my role.”...

The information provided by the USMC directly contradicts Phillips’ claims. Misleading statements about his military service are not the only deceptions on Phillips’ part.

Phillips has changed several details of his account of the confrontation with Covington Catholic High School students at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., during the March for Life on Jan. 18. He initially claimed the Kentucky students confronted, surrounded, and mocked him and his Native American colleagues as he was on his way to the Lincoln Memorial. Videos of the encounter showed that it was Phillips who in fact approached the students and confronted them.

A Colorado school district placed a seventh-grade teacher on leave following her alleged claim on Twitter that a random student was part of the “Hitler Youth,” mistaking him for one of the Covington Catholic High School boys caught in the encounter with American Indian activist Nathan Phillips.

Mountain Ridge Middle School (MRMS) social studies teacher Michelle Grissom allegedly named and posted a picture of Covington Catholic student Jay Jackson as one of the boys wearing Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats in Washington, D.C. Jackson was not in Washington with his schoolmates at the time of the now-infamous incident...

John Jackson said in a series of tweets his son was not at the U.S. capital due to basketball games on Friday and Saturday. The dad added his son faced harassment and bullying because of the accusations.

Covington Catholic students Sam Schroder and Grant Hillmann said they’ve been hit with threats of being burned alive and sexually abused, following this past weekend’s March for Life incident.

“I was doxed three separate occasions before we posted that video. And the threats, they’ve been horrible,” Hillmann said Wednesday on “Fox & Friends.”

“I’ve never heard such cruel things wished upon another human being — ranges from getting locked inside a building and burned alive to sexually assaulted by the clergy members,” he said. “It’s just awful.”

A seconds-long video shared on Twitter appeared to show the students surrounding and taunting a Native American. The key detail in the video: Several students had "Make America Great Again" hats on.

That was enough for the mainstream press to pick up the story and run with it. Without bothering to do normal reportorial due diligence.

On Saturday, the New York Times ran a story with the headline: "Boys in 'Make America Great Again' Hats Mob Native Elder at Indigenous Peoples March."...

Then, later that same day, the story fell apart.

Twitter has refused to delete many calls for violence by verified Twitter celebrities against conservative Catholic students or suspend the offenders from the platform.

A fake news story falsely accused Covington Catholic High School students of harassing a Native American activist outraged the internet this past weekend. The story has since been corrected by some outlets, but the damage has been done. Twitter has still not taken down many of these threats or calls for violence.

Twitchy reported the most violent example. It featured Hollywood producer Jack Morrissey, who worked on Disney's Beauty and the Beast, tweeting that the Covington kids should be thrown screaming into a wood chipper.

As classes resumed Wednesday at Covington Catholic High School for the first time since a nationwide firestorm of controversy erupted, the investigation into alleged death threats against students and the school started in earnest.

Detectives from Erlanger began the work of securing subpoenas and warrants for online records Wednesday afternoon. They started by pulling some of the many alleged threats from the internet.

There is no precise count yet, but Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders estimated this week there could be hundreds of such threats.

Residents of this affluent northern Kentucky town emerged from a turbulent holiday weekend with a question: How did a viral video showing local students interacting with a drumbeating Native American man on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial suck their community into the fractious national debates about politics and race?

President Trump was tweeting about them. Out-of-town protesters were showing up with signs, chanting in the street. And death threats had shut down Covington Catholic High School. No one knew when it would be safe to open again.

The Kentucky high school whose students are at the center of a viral video controversy after last week’s March for Life Rally says it will stay closed Tuesday due to safety concerns.

The announcement by Covington High School Principal Robert Rowe was made in a letter sent to parents, students and staff. Students from the Catholic school are said to be facing death threats – and have been widely maligned and vilified online – after a video clip emerged Saturday that gave some commenters an inaccurate impression that the teens were harassing a Native American man, Nathan Phillips, following the pro-life demonstration...

Subsequent video footage released over the weekend revealed the students were accosted and yelled at before Phillips and other Native American activists approached them. Another group – the so-called Black Hebrew Israelites – were heard shouting abuse at the students for wearing “Make America Great Again” hats.

"I’m not saying death threats are ok, but you reap what you sow. That’s my point. PUNK ASS KIDS KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOING. And I did see the video. Israelites? We deal with them in NYC on the street all the time, shouting their shit. So what? Those kids? #glasshouses."

I just knew he was a bigot, a thug...

No video can show every perspective, but the 3 hours of footage I watched complicated the good versus evil narrative I’d assumed to be fact.

It also reminded me, once again, of the dangers of confirmation bias.

When I saw a young white man in a red MAGA hat staring down a Native American elder, I just knew he was a bigot, a thug.

In writing and speaking about this, I have drawn parallels to the Rolling Stone/University of Virginia gang rape hoax of 2014, which provides a powerful example of mainstream media getting a story very wrong in ways that permanently damaged the magazine's reputation.
