After winning the presidency, Mr. Obama halted enforcement of most of No Child’s key provisions and offered waivers to states that signed up for more lenient rules devised by the Education Department… During the Clinton-Bush era (1999 to 2008), white 9-year-olds gained 11 points in math, African-American student performance rose by 13 points and Hispanic student performance leaped by 21 points. In reading, the gains by white 9-year-olds went up seven points, black performance jumped by 18 points and Hispanic student achievement climbed 14 points.

Those remarkable gains came to an end after the Obama administration took charge. Between 2008-12, gains by African-Americans at age 9 were just two points in each subject, while Hispanics gained one point in reading and nothing in math. Whites gained one point in reading and two points in math… -Paul E. Peterson, a professor of government at Harvard Go To Site

For decades we have tried to boost academic outcomes by hiring more teachers, and we have essentially nothing to show for it. In 1970, public schools employed 2.06 million teachers, or one for every 22.3 students, according to the U.S. Department of Education's Digest of Education Statistics.

In 2012, we have 3.27 million teachers, one for every 15.2 students. Yet math and reading scores for 17-year-olds have remained virtually unchanged since 1970, according to the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Educational Progress. -Jay P. Greene Go To Site

The Department of Education has just released its first state-by-state comparison of education statistics, and the report has a few surprises. Texas performed extremely well, tying five other states for the third-best graduation rate in the country, at 86 percent. And Texas isn’t the only high-performing red state: Indiana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Tennessee all place within the top ten as well.

Meanwhile, New York, Rhode Island, and California, all of which take a traditional, high-spending, blue model approach to education, are closer to the middle of the pack , with graduation rates in the mid-70s. This is convincing evidence against the popular notion that we can fix the public education system if only we are willing to spend more money.

Not only does Texas do a better job of graduating its students than its blue state competition; it does so at a fraction of the cost per student. -Walter Russell Mead Go To Site

We find that traditionally collected input measures — class size, per pupil expenditure, the fraction of teachers with no certification, and the fraction of teachers with an advanced degree — are not correlated with school effectiveness. -Harvard researchers Will Dobbie and Roland Freyer Go To Site

Union, Government, Obama, Oops, Education

Three years ago, it was rated one of the worst schools in Colorado; located on turf between two rival gangs,” Obama said. “But last May, 97 percent of the seniors received their diploma. Most will be the first in their family to go to college.”

What Obama failed to mention is how Bruce Randolph turned its situation around: firing teachers at will after being granted an exemption from union rules.

Head Start Education Program: No Lasting Impact

For 48 years, liberals have used the Head Start education program for low income kids as the shining example of how the federal government can make a difference to the lives of people. But a new study suggests otherwise. So why keep spending $180 on an ineffective program?

Liberal, Incompetence, Oops, Education

The Blue School is one big play date in desperate need of adult supervision. Parents are yanking their kids out of the “progressive,” $32,000 per-year private school founded by the Blue Man Group — which has no books and no tests — because their kids are barely learning to read, The Post has learned. “It’s all fun and games until you realize your second-grader can’t read,” a parent wrote on Urbanbaby.com... Some experts said parents who choose progressive schools shouldn’t expect to see the same results as they do from a conventional school.

More Money For Education

More Money For Education

The money we’ve spent has been wasted. It isn’t the just the Tea Party and Ayn Rand acolytes saying these things. It’s President Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services. It’s Time magazine. A paradigm is falling apart.

Conservatives & Academia

In decisions ranging from paper reviews to hiring, many social and personality psychologists admit that they would discriminate against openly conservative colleagues. The more liberal respondents are, the more willing they are to discriminate.
