When Democrats pushed gun control in the wake of the March 30, 1981 attempt on President Ronald Reagan’s life, Reagan responded by pointing out that the “more than 20,000 gun controls” then on the books proved powerless to keep John Hinckley Jr. from possessing a gun.
Reagan’s point was clear–if 20,000 laws had not worked, what could Democrats really hope by increasing the number to 20,001? -AWR Hawkins
A 2007 study in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy entitled “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?” looked at firearms prevalence and violence in countries around the world. The authors found that gun bans are ineffective because they do not affect the socio-cultural and economic factors that are the real determinants of violent crime rates. -Patrick Tyrrell

A Democratic Connecticut state legislator introduced a bill on Monday that would raise the tax on ammunition in the state by 50 percent...
"Currently, ammunition is taxed at the same rate as other products, but we want to increase it by 50 percent, because we see it as a prevention measure," Gilchrest says in the video. "For example, if someone were to buy a 50 cartridge box of ammunition, which goes for about $10, it would increase the price to $15."...
"We see this as a public health measure, similar to what we've done in the state of Connecticut with increasing the tax on cigarettes," Gilchrest said. "When we increase that tax, we've seen a reduction in use."

Two House Democrats on Wednesday introduced legislation that would set up a federal firearms licensing system, and all gun sales and transfers to be registered on this system.
Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., introduced the bill after a recent wave of school shootings, but he has introduced similar bills in past congresses.
The Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act would prohibit unlicensed gun ownership, and would require a valid firearms license for transferring and receiving guns. It would require universal background checks for all sales and transfers of guns, and would make it easier for state and federal officials to trace guns.
It would direct the U.S. attorney general to create and maintain a "federal record of sale" system.

The two brothers suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings, who police say engaged in a gun battle with officers early Friday after a frenzied manhunt, were not licensed to own guns in the towns where they lived, authorities said on Sunday. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in the shootout with police, would have been required to apply for a gun license with the local police department where he lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. But there is no record of him having done so, according to Cambridge Police Department spokesman Dan Riviello.

Two days after Senate Democrats claimed they would not seek a ban on modern firearms and feeding devices, Democrats in the Oregon House introduced just that... HB 3200 not only bans most modern guns and magazines, it allows warrantless searches of your home, requires background checks and registration for a firearm you already own and as-of-yet undefined storage requirements.
Scott Harshbarger, the state's Democratic attorney general, agreed: "This vote is a victory for common sense and for the protection of our children and our neighborhoods." One of the state's leading anti-gun activists, John Rosenthal of Stop Handgun Violence, joined the applause. "The new gun law," he predicted, "will certainly prevent future gun violence and countless grief." It didn't... Since 1998, gun crime in Massachusetts has gotten worse, not better. Instead of "lead[ing] the way in cracking down on gun violence," the state has seen gun violence shoot up. In 2011, Massachusetts recorded 122 murders committed with firearms, the Boston Globe reported this month – "a striking increase from the 65 in 1998." ... Federal Assault Weapons Ban Not Effective...
We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation's recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence.

In 1911, the same year The New York Times noted a disturbing fondness for handguns among "low-browed foreigners," New York passed the Sullivan Law, which required handgun owners to obtain police permits. The law gave local authorities a great deal of discretion to prevent "undesirables" from legally owning handguns.

Chinese communist government Xinhua News: Innocent blood demands no delay for U.S. gun control... Obama said of the latest tragedy the country had "been through this too many times," and it was time to put aside political differences and "take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this." Some people have noticed Obama's tougher tone this time, compared to the Colorado shooting, when he called for "prayer and reflection." Action speaks louder than words. If Obama wants to take practical measures to control guns, he has to make preparation for a protracted war and considerable political cost. ...So the Chinese communist government, which murdered tens of millions of its own citizens not that long ago, wants gun control in the US. Ummm... NO. Many thanks to the Chinese communist government for weighing in. -Randy Breitbart

During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, "to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda," she said. Chief Justice Roger Taney’s infamous opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford circularly argued that blacks could not be citizens because if they were citizens, they would have the right to own guns: "[I]t would give them the full liberty," he said, "to keep and carry arms wherever they went."
