According to many historical accounts, Chavez ordered union members to call the Immigration and Naturalization Service and report illegal immigrants who were working in the fields so that they could be deported. Some UFW officials were also known to picket INS offices to demand a crackdown on illegal immigrants. In the 70s, the UFW set up a "wet line" to stop undocumented Mexican immigrants from entering the United States. Under the supervision of Chavez's cousin, Manuel, UFW members tried at first to persuade Mexicans not to cross the border. One time when that didn't work, they physically attacked and beat them up to scare them off, according to reports at the time.
Pro-Union activists using bullhorns and spit interrupted a quiet discussion in Vancouver, Washington, about “right to work” laws that would allow prevent workers from being forced to join unions... The protestors’ main tactic was to use bullhorns to shout down the meeting attendees. One of the protestors went so far as to spit on Vencent Vernuccio, a labor expert for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy and a keynote speaker.

A former Philadelphia union boss was sentenced Monday to more than 19 years in prison for overseeing violence, vandalism and intimidation at nonunion work sites, including a Quaker meetinghouse... "His leadership led to a lot of damage," the judge said. "It led to a lot of crimes and it continued the bad reputation Philadelphia has for tolerating union violence."
Witnesses also described torching another site, attacking nonunion workers and their cars with baseball bats, rumbling with a rival union and flattening tires and causing other "mischief" on an 18-month picket line outside a new apartment complex.

Rocks, knives, guns, sledgehammers, explosives and bare fists are frequent means of intimidation.
From the standpoint of psychological warfare, so are threatening phone calls, letters, emails, menacing stares, and unscheduled "visits" to the homes of targets.

The Teamsters picketers were already mad. By the time Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi’s car pulled up to the Steel & Rye restaurant in the picturesque New England town of Milton just outside Boston, one of them ran up to her car and screamed, “We’re gonna bash that pretty face in, you fucking whore!”...
Angry that the show had not signed a Teamsters contract and that the production hired local PA’s to drive cast and crew vehicles, the dozen or so picketers from Boston’s Teamsters Local 25 kept at it for hours, raining down racist, sexist and homophobic threats and slurs as staffers came to and left the set that summer day.
I was very troubled to learn recently that despite having made stalking illegal in Illinois, elected officials in the state have afforded union bosses an exemption. Yes, that’s correct; during labor disputes, Illinois’s law against “aggravated stalking” does not apply to union organizers (Public Act 097-0468). This leads to a simple and logical question: is it ever acceptable to engage in stalking? Apparently, the answer in the Land of Lincoln is yes. -Katie Packer Gage

According to the indictment, Local 401’s business agents (chapter heads) would visit non-union worksites, offer perfunctory invitations to employ unionized workers, and when declined, the union organized pickets, assaulted non-union workers and conducted clandestine attacks on worksites, including arson, frequently at night. Collectively, twelve union members, including two business agents, have been accused and eleven have pleaded guilty.

United Grain, a division of Japan's Mitsui & Co., said it hired a former FBI investigator to examine several suspicious equipment failures at the Vancouver terminal. On Monday, United Grain received a report from the investigator claiming that a ILWU Local 4 worker — a member of the union's bargaining committee — on Dec. 22 placed a two-foot-long metal pipe into the company's conveyor system, causing it to shut down. On the same day, the same worker put sand and water into a gear box, causing enough damage that it would have to be replaced at an estimated cost of $105,000, according to the investigator's report.

“It was terrible,” Tarver said of yesterday. ”I lost two tables, all my utensils, all my catering equipment, they smashed my buns, my coolers.” Tarver said that the union protesters assumed he was with AFP because he was in close proximity to their tent. Even though he repeatedly told them that he was not, it didn’t stop the union protesters from destroying his property as he stood by and watched helplessly. Tarver confirmed what other outlets have reported, that union protesters called him racial slurs and he explains that he just stood there and took it. Tarver said that Republican Michigan lawmaker Joe Hune is paying to replace all of his lost equipment and supplies.

Apparently, you just can't get good goons nowadays. And that makes sense. In the old days of the labor movement, the unionized industries were, you know, actual industries, involving miners, steelworkers and the like. And those are trades that foster exactly the qualities you need in good goons. -Glenn Harlan Reynolds, Washington Examiner

But he was replaced in August by an acting president after the ILA’s national leaders in New York determined that a heroin-dealing conviction from the 1970s rendered him ineligible for the position, since felons are barred from serving as union officers.
