In court, former longtime St. Joseph County Democratic Chairman Butch Morgan, Jr. was sentenced to one year behind bars, and is expected to serve half that, as well as Community Corrections and probation. Former St. Joseph County Board of Elections worker and Democratic volunteer Dustin Blythe received a sentence of one year in Community Corrections and probation, which means no jail time. In April, a jury convicted Morgan and Blythe on numerous felony conspiracy counts to commit petition fraud and felony forgery counts. Former St. Joseph County Board of Voter Registration Democratic board member Pam Brunette and Board of Voter Registration worker Beverly Shelton previously pleaded guilty and testified for prosecutors against Morgan and Blythe.

Brash former state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr., who ran a once-respected health care network, was sentenced Friday to five years in prison for looting the taxpayer-subsidized clinics to pay for children's pony rides and other extravagances. U.S. District Judge Frederic Block immediately jailed Espada rather than let him report to prison, citing evidence that he defied a court order to stay away from jurors after his trial. The judge also ordered him to forfeit more than $368,000.

Meridian attorney Rod Amos who ran in the Democrat Primary for mayor was arrested early Sunday by Meridian police. Department spokesman Capt. Dean Harper confirmed Amos was arrested just after 3 a.m. and faces several charges, all misdemeanors. Amos was charged with DUI refusal, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, resisting arrest, and obstructing traffic.

The IRS has brought in private industry experts to employ similar digital tracking -- but with the added advantage of access to Social Security numbers, health records, credit card transactions and many other privileged forms of information that marketers don't see. "Private industry would be envious if they knew what our models are," boasted Dean Silverman, the agency's high-tech top gun who heads a group recruited from the private sector to update the IRS, in a comment reported in trade publications.

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation with the Liberty Institute, said Joshua High School principal Mick Cochran threatened to write a letter to the U.S. Naval Academy disparaging the character of Remington Reimer. “It was intimidating having my high school principal threaten my future because I wanted to stand up for the Constitution and acknowledge my faith and not simply read a government approved speech, the teenager said.

ROMULUS, Mich. - Detroit's emergency manager says the city is defaulting on about $2.5 billion of debt. Kevyn Orr said Friday that Detroit is asking creditors to take about 10 cents on the dollar of what they're owed. Underfunded pension claims will get less. Orr spent about two hours Friday morning with dozens of people representing banks, insurers and companies holding Detroit debt.

Organizers of the Charlotte, N.C., convention have filed a police report for lost and stolen electronics, some of which they appear to have valued at as much as 62 times the listed market prices. A reportedly stolen 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop? $75,537. The price listed on the Apple website is $1,199. A lost iPhone? $30,503. A lost Blackberry? $54,250. The DNC did not respond to a request for comment.

A West Virginia woman who suffered complications after a botched abortion is suing the abortionist who left several of her baby’s body parts, including its skull, inside her womb. The woman, Itai Gravely, 26, claims she changed her mind about the procedure as abortionist Rodney Lee Stephens was administering her anesthesia. But rather than heed her request for him to stop, the Charleston, W.Va., abortionist ordered his assistants to hold her down and went ahead with the procedure.
