Patients Allowed To Check Out Early

"The eyes of the world are turning to Great Britain," he proclaimed. "We now have the moral leadership of the world."

Each week 24 disabled people are killed by such prejudiced presumptions; indeed, there was a case at my local hospital recently. These shocking figures are based on a government-commissioned inquiry into one region of the country, which found people with disabilities 37% more likely to be killed by incompetence or inadequate care – and their lives end on average 16 years earlier than they should. NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday. Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly. Go To Site

On 4 July 1948, Aneurin Bevan gave his most famous speech. Although now mostly remembered for a throwaway remark about Tories being "lower than vermin", it was another part of the address by the then minister for health that caught the headlines at the time. Bevan was in Manchester to be present at the birth of the National Health Service. "The eyes of the world are turning to Great Britain," he proclaimed. "We now have the moral leadership of the world." Go To Site

Do-not-resuscitate orders were wrongly allocated to some care home residents during the Covid-19 pandemic, causing potentially avoidable deaths, the first phase of a review by England’s Care Quality Commission has found...

Some people reported that they did not even know a DNACPR order had been placed on their relative until they were quite unwell.

“There is evidence of unacceptable and inappropriate DNACPRs being made at the start of the pandemic,” the interim report found, adding that the practice may have caused “potentially avoidable death”.

As many as 650 patients at a small British hospital died from overdoses of powerful painkillers that they did not need, an investigative panel reported on Wednesday.

Officials failed or refused to exercise proper oversight for years, the panel determined, while family members and nurses who complained were dismissed as troublemakers...

Perhaps most disturbing was that while many of the patients were elderly, most were not seriously ill.

In his introduction to the lengthy, meticulously documented report, Bishop Jones — who has also headed other high-profile inquiries — wrote that “whereas a large number of patients and their relatives understood that their admission to the hospital was for either rehabilitation or respite care, they were, in effect, put on a terminal care pathway.”

The 2004 figures show that NHS had the worst figures of all seven countries. Once the death rate was adjusted, England was 22 per cent higher than the average of all seven countries and it was 58 per cent higher than the best country. That meant NHS patients were almost 60 per cent more likely to die in hospital compared with patients in the best country.

Patients are 45% more likely to die in NHS hospitals than in US ones, according to figures revealing how badly England’s health service compares with those of other countries. A patient in England was five times as likely to die of pneumonia and twice as likely to die of septicaemia compared to similar patients in the US, the leading country in the study, the data suggested.

As many as 1,165 people starved to death in NHS hospitals over the past four years fuelling claims nurses are too busy to feed their patients. The Department of Health branded the figures 'unacceptable' and said the number of unannounced inspections by the care watchdog will increase. In 2011, 43 patients starved to death and 291 died in a state of severe malnutrition, while the number of patients discharged from hospital suffering from malnutrition doubled to 5,558. Dianne Jeffrey, chairwoman of Malnutrition Task Force, condemned the statistics. She told The Sunday Express: 'Too many are paying the price with their lives while being deprived of the basic right to good nutrition, hydration and support.'

LONDON — Shockingly bad care and inhumane treatment at a hospital in the Midlands led to hundreds of unnecessary deaths and stripped countless patients of their dignity and self-respect, according to a scathing report published on Wednesday.

London: A former NHS hospital chief turned whistleblower has been paid £500,000 (Dh2.8 million) in a ‘supergag’ deal to prevent him discussing his concerns about patient safety. Gary Walker said he was asked to “compromise the safety of patients in order to achieve government targets” at the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust where he worked. Last night, an MP compared the situation to the scandal at Mid Staffordshire Trust where up to 1,200 patients died “unnecessarily” because of the focus on targets. Tory MP Stephen Phillips said he suspected there has been a scandal of “similar proportions” at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust.

Malnutrition killed more than 240 patients on NHS wards in 2007, the highest toll in a decade, figures show. The appalling statistics reveal that the number of men and women starving to death in hospitals has risen by 16 per cent since Labour came to power. Since 1997, 2,311 hospital patients have died from malnutrition and the effects of hunger.

A 29-year-old woman will die without a new drug that the NHS is refusing to provide despite the manufacturer offering it to her for free, it emerged today. Caroline Cassin, 29, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) has been offered a new drug free of charge for a limited period by the makers but her NHS hospital is refusing. Her family say she will die soon without it, yet managers at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham say it would be unethical to provide the drug under the deal, only for it to be withdrawn later.

The reports last week of Kane Gorny’s final hours beggared belief. The 22-year-old had been admitted to one of the UK’s top teaching hospitals for hip replacement surgery, but within three days he’d died of thirst, after medical staff ignored both his pleas for water and the symptoms of dehydration that experts say are ‘easy to recognise’. When Kane, in desperation, rang 999 on his mobile, a policeman who responded to his call witnessed him shouting repeatedly to the nursing staff: ‘Can I have some water?’

Health service trusts are “imposing pain and inconvenience” by making patients wait longer than necessary, in some cases as long as four months, the study found. Executives believe the delays mean some people will remove themselves from lists “either by dying or by paying for their own treatment” claims the report, by an independent watchdog that advises the NHS.

A teenage boy was left to die in agony after 'chaotic and substandard' care at Great Ormond Street Hospital, the parliamentary health service ombudsman ruled. Arvind Jain, 13, died from malnutrition after waiting eight months for a routine 30-minute operation to insert a feeding tube into his stomach. A scathing report has now found that Arvind, who suffered from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a condition that causes muscles to weaken, would have survived were it not for a series of delays by the hospital.

Hot on the heels of the Royal College of Surgeon's report two weeks ago that thousands of older people are dying because of sub-standard post-operative care, we have another appalling report detailing how processes are being prioritised over patients. The NHS Bill debates going on both inside and outside of Parliament have included many predictions of woe if the Bill is passed, as if what we have now is ideal! Of course we have much to be proud of in the NHS, but complacency and sentimentality have no place in an NHS in which people are dying for lack of care.

When Kenneth Warden was diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer, his hospital consultant sent him home to die, ruling that at 78 he was too old to treat. Even the palliative surgery or chemotherapy that could have eased his distressing symptoms were declared off-limits because of his age... Sadly, Kenneth’s story is symptomatic of a dreadful truth. According to shocking new research by Macmillan Cancer Support, every year many thousands of older people are routinely denied life-saving NHS treatments because their doctors write them off as too old to treat.

LONDON, July 29 (UPI) -- Managers in Britain's public health service are deliberately delaying operations to save money, an official report says. Some NHS executives insist the delays would lead to savings as "experience suggests that if patients wait longer, then some will remove themselves from the list."

Britain is somewhat ahead of us in packing off to eternity those who are too expensive and/or are unproductive. Dr. Pellegrino tells of being in London not long ago for a medical conference where an English doctor told him he had recently refused to do a coronary bypass on a 52-year-old man. The procedure was clearly indicated, and without it, the patient would not be around much
longer.

The English physician explained that the man was a coal miner, but even with the operation, he would never have a job again. Accordingly, the doctor decided that it was not fair to society to prolong this man’s life because then society would have to keep putting money into this unproductive person for who knew how many years...
