Chick-Fil-A

"And yet the brand’s arrival here feels like an infiltration, in no small part because of its pervasive Christian traditionalism." -Dan Piepenbring

Mayor Bill de Blasio and members of the New York City Council are calling for a city-wide boycott of Chick-fil-A – urging citizens to refrain from eating plump juicy chicken breasts tucked between hot buttered buns.

Councilman Daniel Dromm was even more blunt – accusing the Southern restaurant chain of spreading a “message of hate.” Go To Site

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has told Chick-fil-A that the fast-food company is not welcome in his town because "Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago values."

In other words, because Chick-fil-A ownership believes in traditional marriage, it shouldn't bother opening up shop in Chicago. But Emanuel is welcoming Louis Farrakhan, who is against same-sex marriage and who blasted President Obama two months ago for endorsing the practice.

The city’s mayor, Rahm Emanuel, agrees with the alderman: Chick-fil-A does not represent “Chicago values” — which is true if by “Chicago values” you mean machine politics, AIDS-conspiracy-peddling pastors, and industrial-scale black youth homicide rates.

But, before he was mayor, Rahm Emanuel was President Obama’s chief of staff. Until the president’s recent “evolution,” the Obama administration held the same position on gay marriage as Chick-fil-A.

Would Alderman Moreno have denied Barack Obama the right to open a chicken restaurant in the First Ward?

CHICAGO, August 1, 2012 — What does a “hate-free” chicken sandwich actually taste like? Inquiring taste buds may want to know. With supporters across the country planning to turn out for the controversial Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day Wednesday, some Chicago restaurants are offering what they are calling a “hate-free” chicken sandwich to show their support for gay marriage.

Ald.Proco "Joe" Moreno announced this week that he will block Chick-fil-A's effort to build its second Chicago store, which would be in the Logan Square neighborhood, following company President Dan Cathy's remarks last week that he was "guilty as charged" for supporting the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman... "Because of this man's ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A's permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward."

Chick-fil-A's "Creepy Infiltration"

The New Yorker Feels Threatened

Oops.

New York has taken to Chick-fil-A. One of the Manhattan locations estimates that it sells a sandwich every six seconds, and the company has announced plans to open as many as a dozen more storefronts in the city.

And yet the brand’s arrival here feels like an infiltration, in no small part because of its pervasive Christian traditionalism. Its headquarters, in Atlanta, are adorned with Bible verses and a statue of Jesus washing a disciple’s feet.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn recently sought to kick Chick-fil-A out of New York because its CEO said he opposed gay marriage. On July 28, she sent the head of New York University, which leases space to the one Chick-fil-A restaurant in New York City, stating, “Chick-fil-A is not welcome in New York City as long as the company’s president welcomes continues to uphold and promote his discriminatory views…I urge you to sever your relationship with the Chick-fil-A establishment that exists on your campus.”

Floyd Lee Corkins, 28, of Herndon, Virginia reportedly entered the building with a Chick-Fil-A bag and shot the guard after an argument where statements were made regarding the FRC's political positions. Corkins, who apparently acted alone, also volunteered at an LGBT center that condemned the attack and apparently had no connection to the commission of the crime. Both Chick-Fil-A and the FRC have been involved in recent heated public debate about gay marriage. Corkins allegedly said "it's not about you, it's about the policy."

WASHINGTON - A Virginia man has been charged in federal court in the shooting of a security guard at the headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group. Federal authorities say Floyd Lee Corkins II told a guard at the Family Research Council, "I don't like your politics" before shooting him in the arm. The guard and others helped subdue Corkins, who was taken into custody. He's been charged with assault with intent to kill and with bringing a firearm across state lines. Authorities found a box of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack.

Dallas Police Association President Ron Pinkston said Sgt. Mark Johnson of the Southeast Patrol Division brought a Chick-fil-A sandwich to the briefing room last Wednesday. It was the same day thousands of people across the country went to the restaurant chain as part of an effort to show support for the CEO's stand against gay marriage. Two lesbian officers filed complaints against the sergeant. They said his comments and actions left them embarrassed and humiliated. Sgt. Johnson, who has been with the department for 12 years, was transferred. The internal affairs department is investigating the complaints.

After his post was shared nearly 100 times, Fort Myers News-Press reporter Mark Krzos pulled the rant and left Facebook. His editor, Terry Eberle, told News-Press and Romenesko readers that the post was “completely inappropriate” and that “we will take strong and appropriate action.” Krzos resigned after a meeting with Eberle.

Someone sprayed glue and pasted marriage equality messages on the windows of the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Frederick overnight on Saturday, according to police. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office responded to the restaurant, at 5501 Urbana Pike, early Sunday morning after the store reported destruction of property. Cpl. Gregory Santangelo said the items glued to the store's windows included marriage equality stickers and an image with the American and gay pride flags combined. There were also several homemade signs, he said. The store hired a cleaner to remove the items early in the day, Santangelo said.

A Chick-fil-A franchise that was approved by Santa Barbara, Calif., city officials last year ran into a roadblock earlier this week, when a local architectural board tried to postpone a vote that would allow construction to begin. The Architectural Board of Review (ABR) sought to postpone the decision because of Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s well-publicized remarks supporting the biblical definition of marriage. But on Tuesday, the Santa Barbara City Council overturned that decision, allowing permits to move forward. And today, councilmembers said ABR members who tried to block the restaurant from opening should resign.

A powerful New York politician claims she was just speaking as a private citizen when she tried to run Chick-fil-A out of town, but she used her official letterhead and even invoked her position as City Council speaker to apply pressure on the embattled chicken chain. New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has mayoral aspirations, sent a letter to New York University president John Sexton on Saturday asking the school to immediately end their contract with the fast food restaurant.

The Recorder asked him about opposition to his company’s support of what the Recorder called “the traditional family.” Mr. Cathy replied “Guilty as charged.” Mr. Cathy didn’t stop there. Quoth he: “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.” He added, “We operate as a family business ... our restaurants are typically led by families — some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that.”

A government official thinks that the proper “consequence” for a business owner’s “statements and beliefs” is the denial of the ability to do business. Because he’s “sure the majority of” his constituents find the owner’s “comments and attitudes repugnant,” it’s just fine for him to use the coercive power of the government to block the business from opening up a store. His “belief in equality is resolute,” and that apparently justifies him discriminating against businesspeople for exercising their First Amendment rights to speak out. As the Boston Herald’s Michael Graham pointed out, Menino is happy to hand out municipal licenses to groups whose most prominent figures call for gays to be put to death.
