Unions: Violent Left-Wing Thugs

"I'm saying if you strike a match and put your finger in, common sense tells you you're going to burn your finger." In other words, Eddie York had it coming.

The labor movement has this old saying, and I don't know if you want to take it -- is if you can't open their minds, open their heads. Go To Site

Also attending was Kenneth Gladney, a vendor selling patriotic flags and ribbons. After the rally, Gladney was confronted by “a group of people in purple shirts” and things got ugly quick when one of the SEIU members (a black man) shouted at Gladney (also a black man), “What kind of a nigger are you?” -John Nolte Go To Site

Powerful public employee unions are a defining feature of the blue model governance system that Democrats are determined to protect.

But as we’ve written before, “the most serious grievances that many Democratic voters feel are about the inadequacy of the services these employees provide: dysfunctional schools, unaccountable law enforcement, abusive prison guards, or inefficient welfare bureaucracies.” -The American Interest Go To Site

A former Philadelphia union boss was sentenced Monday to more than 19 years in prison for overseeing violence, vandalism and intimidation at nonunion work sites, including a Quaker meetinghouse... "His leadership led to a lot of damage," the judge said. "It led to a lot of crimes and it continued the bad reputation Philadelphia has for tolerating union violence."

Witnesses also described torching another site, attacking nonunion workers and their cars with baseball bats, rumbling with a rival union and flattening tires and causing other "mischief" on an 18-month picket line outside a new apartment complex.

A speaker at a union protest against right-to-work legislation said if Gov. Rick Snyder signed the bill he would get "no rest" and that protesters would be at his "daughter's soccer game." We'll be at your office. "Because Michigan workers will not take it laying down — by any means necessary!" he said. Geddes Road is where the Snyder residence is located.

A judge ordered one of Chicago’s most politically powerful labor unions to suspend picketing against 16 funeral homes last week after receiving reports that striking Teamsters had, among other things, disturbed a child’s funeral. SCI Illinois Services, Inc., one of the nation’s largest funeral home chains, asked a district court to intervene after striking funeral directors and drivers with Teamsters Local 727 allegedly harassed grieving families. The company testified in its filing that union members blocked grieving family members from leaving its parking lot, used bullhorns to shout obscenities at workers and mourners, and unleashed a German Shepard on a dead woman’s daughter and husband.

Clinton Tarver has been serving hot dogs to hungry locals in downtown Lansing, Mich., for the last five years, but a brush this week with a pro-union protest literally upended his small business in a matter of minutes. During a protest against right-to-work legislation in Michigan's capital, Tarver’s catering supplies were destroyed when demonstrators tore down the tent where he was serving and trampled his gear. “I kept explaining that I was just here to do a job, that I wasn’t on anybody’s side, but when people started calling me racial slurs, my friend who works at the Capitol told me I had to get out of there, so I crawled out,” said Tarver, who is black.

Though the city is solidly Democratic, the plan to put the Police Department out of business has not prompted the wide public outcry seen in the union battles in Chicago, Ohio or Wisconsin, in part because many residents have come to resent a police force they see as incompetent, corrupt and doing little to make their streets safe. A police union has sued to stop the move, saying it is risking public safety on an “unproven” idea. But many residents, community groups and elected officials say that the city is simply out of money, out of options, out of patience.

Buried amid the generally gloomy news last week was a development that is a true cause for celebration. By July, the Twinkie, and other favorite Hostess brands will return to store shelves. Two investment companies bought assets of the bankrupt snack company and plan to re-open four plants and hire 1,500 workers in the coming weeks. Labor unions, however, will not be invited back. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said that if President Barack Obama wins a second term, Americans should expect to see "card check" legislation "within the next term." Trumka, whose unions are sending nearly 2,000 poll monitors to battleground states, told The Atlantic that Big Labor will demand the Obama administration pass legislation that would effectively end secret ballot elections to form unions. When The Atlantic asked Trumka if he has given up on card check, Trumka said it was still the unions' top priority after 2012 if Obama wins, and they will never give up on it. "You'll see it," Trumka said. "That's within the next term."

The 111-to-42 vote followed tougher measures to broadly eliminate collective bargaining rights for public employees in Ohio, Wisconsin, and other states. But unlike those efforts, the push in Massachusetts was led by Democrats who have traditionally stood with labor to oppose any reduction in workers’ rights.

In government language that would make George Orwell smile, the time that federal workers spend working for their unions and not working for taxpayers is termed "official time." According to the report, "Official time, broadly defined, is paid time off from assigned Government duties to represent a union or its bargaining unit employees." Go To Site

As Venuccio and Lehman report, between 1980 and 2011, overall employment levels rose by 71 percent in right-to-work states. In non-right-to-work states, they only rose by 32 percent. That differential does not come at the expense of wages, which grew four times as fast in right-to-work states: 12 percent versus 3 percent elsewhere. The explanation is clear enough. The productivity gains from escaping union work rules are shared with employees as employers bid up wages. The short-term monopoly gains to unionized workers eventually are, over time, more than offset by productivity losses. A U.S. bankruptcy judge approved Hostess Brands' plan to wind down the company after last-minute mediation fell through Tuesday night between the snack maker and one of its biggest unions. The liquidation comes after the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union called a nationwide strike earlier in the month. Hostess, the maker of Wonder Bread and Twinkies, said in a statement Wednesday after the court hearing that the move by the labor union "crippled its operations at a time when [it] lacked the financial resources to survive a significant labor action." Hostess plans on shuttering 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes, 570 bakery outlet stores as part of the liquidation process.
