Last week it was reported that militant ecologists destroyed parts of a ski lift and an artificial snow production station at the Wurmberg in the Harz region of Germany, declaring themselves to be members of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Court records show 39-year-old Rebecca Rubin will change her not-guilty pleas to charges of conspiracy and arson in U.S. District in Portland. One of the three remaining fugitives in a string of ecoterrorism fires set in Oregon, Colorado and California has surrendered to authorities. The U.S. attorney's office in Portland, Ore., said Thursday that 39-year-old Rebecca Jeanette Rubin turned herself in to the FBI at the Canadian border in Blaine, Wash. Rubin has been sought as part of a group based in Eugene, Ore., known as The Family, on charges she took part in setting fires at the Vail ski resort in Colorado, a timber company office in Oregon, and wild horse corrals in Oregon and Northern California.

TACOMA, Wash. — Thirty-two-year old Justin Solondz has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in the 2001 arson at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture. The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/jPBbl3 ) Solondz pleaded guilty in December to arson and conspiracy. Prosecutors say he built firebombs that started the 2001 fire at the university's Center for Urban Horticulture in Seattle. Members of the Earth Liberation Front mistakenly thought a researcher was genetically altering poplar trees. The fire caused $6 million damaged and destroyed the work of several UW researchers.

An underground group of environmentalists has claimed responsibility for a fire in December at the U.S. Forest Industries headquarters in Medford. More ominous, though, was the message someone left on the bridge. In red marker, someone printed, “Next time fire.” On another part of the bridge, someone had printed, “Your house is known.” In another spot in small letters was printed “ELF.” ELF is an abbreviation for Earth Liberation Front, an organization that in the last 15 years has been involved in more than 600 acts that are classified as domestic terrorism, according to the FBI.

Daniel McGowan, a 38-year-old environmental activist from Queens, was released yesterday from prison in Terra Haute, Indiana. A Detroit-area man has been charged with damaging logging equipment as part of an environmental protest more than 10 years ago in northern Michigan. Federal prosecutors in Grand Rapids recently unsealed an indictment against 30-year-old Jesse Waters of St. Clair Shores, who is accused of setting fire to logging equipment and a flatbed trailer near Mesick (ME'-sick) in Wexford County in late 1999 or early 2000.

Jared McIntyre of Coram was sentenced on Tuesday to three and a half years in prison for his part in arsons committed in the name of an extremist environmental group at three new homes being built in Suffolk in December 2000.

Blackwell and Linas used kerosene-soaked wicks to set fire to the fuel tanks of vehicles being used to construct a mall in Henrico. Between December 8, 2003 and January 12, 2004, three members of an ELF cell in Richmond, Virginia entered guilty pleas to federal arson and conspiracy charges, following their arrests by the FBI Richmond Division and local authorities. Adam Blackwell, Aaron Linas and John Wade admitted to conducting a series of arson and property destruction attacks in 2002 and 2003 against sport utility vehicles, fast food restaurants, construction vehicles and construction sites in the Richmond area, which they later claimed were committed on behalf of the ELF.
