Shouting Them Down

Pro-choice protesters shouted, "Hail Satan!" as an attempt to drown out pro-lifers’ rendition of "Amazing Grace."

Sixty-six percent of college students think shouting down a speaker they disagree with is acceptable to shut down their talk, and another 23 percent believe violence can be used to cancel a speech, according to a wide-scale survey...

Another key finding is that nearly one in four students say it’s acceptable to use violence to stop a campus speech — up 5 percent over last year’s survey — with some elite colleges bringing that figure to as high as one in three students accepting of such violence.

Approximately 200 student protesters at Wisconsin’s Beloit College crashed a Wednesday evening event sponsored by the Young Americans for Freedom … and ultimately shut it down.

University of Oregon students forcefully disrupted a speech by the school’s president Friday, forcing him to deliver a video address announcing a $50 million gift to the school.

According to The Oregonian, UO President Michael Schill was planning to outline how the school plans to put the massive donation to use, but was driven from the stage by students shouting chants such “Nothing about us without us!” and referring to him as “CEO Schill.”...

A recording of Schill’s address was released in lieu of the speech, in which he reminds students that “if someone says something we don’t like, we should not try to shut them down” because “the antidote to speech we don’t like is MORE SPEECH.”

After a protester single-handedly shut down a March 5 Portland State University College Republicans speaker event, as police stood by doing nothing to intervene, the school is now doubling down in defense of the way the incident was handled... the university maintains that “no crime took place” at the event, even after being presented with the Oregon State Statute defining “the crime of disorderly conduct” as committing certain acts “with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or recklessly creating a risk thereof.”

The listed acts include making “unreasonable noise” and disturbing “any lawful assembly of persons without lawful authority.”

Ohio State Legislature: Monkeys In A Zoo...

The trans campaign to make the travesty of people with Y chromosomes competing in women's sports legal, as if it were remotely fair, is nonsense, and every sentient American knows it. But at this particular moment, when this particular Ohio rep got up to speak, a few despicable Democrats decided to behave like the thugs they are.

As she spoke, several of the Democrats began booing and banging their desks as if they were monkeys in a zoo.

Student protesters attempted to block the entrances to Tommy Robinson’s speech at Columbia University Tuesday night, then stormed inside to ensure that the event could not proceed. According to a Facebook page for the protest, the rally was explicitly dubbed an “anti-fascist” protest to show that “alt-right speakers” allegedly like Robinson are “not welcome on our campus.”...

The protests eventually grew so rowdy that Robinson, who planned to Skype in for the appearance from England, had to call a delay. Although Robinson eventually tuned in, protesters continued to shout over him, preventing him from speaking, and later storming the stage as administrators attempted to dissuade them but to no success.

Under different circumstances, Alabama civil rights lawyer Morris S. Dees and American Enterprise Institute scholar Charles Murray might have been colleagues, even pals.

Instead, Murray found himself in a near-riot at Middlebury College after accepting a speaking invitation from Republican students at the Vermont school. Students and faculty galvanized by Dees’ political organization barred Murray from speaking.

They shouted him down, chanted their own manifesto, and pulled fire alarms to prevent him from being heard. Go To Site

Around the time that the class began, however, protesters entered the classroom to protest, disrupting the event, standing up in the room, and carrying banners that read, “F**k ICE,” forcing Redbird to cancel the talk out of concern for the speaker’s safety.

A speech by Heather Mac Donald at UCLA on Wednesday frequently descended into chaos as Black Lives Matter protesters stormed the stage and chanted their signature phrase over and over, and also took over portions of the Q&A with angry accusations and raucous shouting, a video of the event shows.

After the uproar — which lasted about eight minutes — finally died down, Mac Donald fielded questions from the audience, including from a black female who asked her to speak on whether “black victims killed by cops” mattered. “Yes,” Mac Donald replied. “And do black children that are killed by other blacks matter to you?” At that the room erupted in gasps and angry moans...

Some students called me (and I’m trying not to laugh) a ‘racist’ and stated that ‘I hate black people.’”

Twelve members of the Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) disrupted a public event hosted by Professor Ami Pedahzur of UT’s Institute for Israeli Studies titled “The Origin of a Species: The Birth of the Israeli Defense Forces’ Military Culture.”... The students not only disrupted the speech, when Prof. Pedahzur and another person (not clear if a professor or just a member of the audience) tried to get them to stop, they increased the volume of their chants calling for the destruction of Israel and “Long Live the Intifada”.

"Freedom of expression is one of the pillars of our democracy. If we start compromising on this, we risk seeing the same censorship overflow in our media, in our political debates. We won't mean anything anymore. No one will dare to talk about immigration, for example, if every time we talk about this, we get screamed nonsense. Nobody wants that. Not me, anyway."

Portland State University students hold an annual forum with the theme "Law and Disorder" at which they critique police conduct. Speakers tend to be people from the left who have a history of speaking out against police brutality. This year, the forum couldn't get started because one of the speakers -- who has published numerous books and articles about the subject -- was shouted down by audience members who objected to some of his recent writing about sexual violence.

Ironically, Gastañaga had intended to speak on the subject, "Students and the First Amendment."...

Organizers then canceled the event; some members of the audience approached the podium in an attempt to speak with Gastañaga, but the protesters would not permit it. They surrounded Gastañaga, raised their voices even louder, and drove everybody else away.

The revolution on college campuses, which seeks to eradicate individuals and ideas that are considered unsavory, constitutes a hostile takeover by fringe elements on the extreme left.

Last spring at the Evergreen State College, where I was a professor for 15 years, the revolution was televised—proudly and intentionally—by the radicals.

Opinions not fitting with the currently accepted dogma—that all white people are racist, that questioning policy changes aimed at achieving “equity” is itself an act of white supremacy—would not be tolerated, and those who disagreed were shouted down, hunted, assaulted, even battered.
