Facebook on Thursday was ripped by politicians on both sides of the Atlantic for “showing its true and ugly colors” and “arrogance” with its ban of reports on whether COVID-19 came from a lab in Wuhan — and for reversing course only after the theories became “fashionable with the liberal elite.”

  The social media giant has long quashed reports questioning if the virus leaked from the Chinese lab — including slapping “False Information” warnings on an op-ed that ran in The Post last year, long before the contagion was officially declared a pandemic.

  It eventually issued an all-out ban of such posts, claiming the theories had been “debunked” — only to lift it this week when President Biden ordered US intelligence agencies to investigate claims long touted by his predecessor, President Trump.

  Facebook completely beclowned itself when it decided to censor information that could be seen as agreeing with Trump or vindicating him on the origins of the coronavirus and promising treatments.

  In March, the company had to admit that it had been premature in its decision to censor information about the lab-leak theory.

  Putting aside the lack of a basis for the earlier ban, the statement reflects that assumption that, of course, Facebook should be the arbiter of what can be discussed by users.

Facebook has lifted a ban on posts claiming Covid-19 was man-made, following a resurgence of interest in the “lab leak” theory of the disease’s onset. The social network says its new policy comes “in light of ongoing investigations into the origin”.

  In February, Facebook explicitly banned the claim, as part of a broad policy update aimed at “removing more false claims about Covid-19 and vaccines”. In a public statement at the time, it said: “Following consultations with leading health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), we are expanding the list of false claims we will remove to include additional debunked claims about the coronavirus and vaccines.”
